What is the difference between Hardie Plank, Hardie Shingle and Hardie Panel?

They are three shapes of the same fiber cement. Hardie Plank is horizontal lap siding, the classic clapboard look. Hardie Shingle comes in straight-edge or staggered-edge panels that look like cedar shingles. Hardie Panel is vertical siding in smooth, cedarmill, stucco and grooved textures, usually paired with battens for a board and batten look.

Product names and textures are from the James Hardie product catalog, linked below.

How do I choose a James Hardie siding contractor?

Ask for an itemized written estimate, the exact product and finish being quoted, how cut dust will be controlled, how the wall wrap and window flashing will be handled, and whether the job needs a township permit. Compare what each quote includes, not just the total. Ask the installer to show you the manufacturer's installation instructions they follow.

Our estimates list all of those items. Published price ranges are on the James Hardie siding cost page.

James Hardie questions

Is Hardie board the same as fiber cement?
Hardie board is the common name for James Hardie's fiber cement siding. Fiber cement is the material; several companies make it. The installation basics are similar across brands.
Can James Hardie siding come pre-painted?
Yes. James Hardie sells factory-finished boards under its ColorPlus name as well as primed boards for painting on site. Factory-finished boards cost more up front and hold color longer.
